Seattle PI: Seattle's South Asian arts festival celebrates community through food (Sept. 22, 2021)
After 15 years as a film festival and two with a literature festival, Seattle’sannual South Asian arts and culture festival merged into a single event with the Tasveer Festival running in a hybrid live and online form Oct. 1-24. Included in the more than 80 different films are a few pictures that explore the concept of community through food or use it as part of the storytelling.

. . . But these cinemas are now starting to reopen their doors to the flick fans who have sorely missed them. Spaces range from the intimate, two-screen Northwest Film Forum on Capitol Hill and the cozy-quirky Grand Illusion in the University District, to single-screen neighborhood faves like The Beacon in Columbia City and Central Cinema in the Central District, to the historic Egyptian Theatre, the largest venue in SIFF Cinema’s mini-indie-empire.

[Seattle, Washington, United States, July 6, 2021]: Tasveer today announced its second year of the Tasveer Film Fund (TFF), a program first launched in June 2020 to help bolster emerging South Asian filmmakers within the U.S. The Tasveer Film Fund aims to empower South Asian filmmakers to bring their scripts to life with $5,000 grants as well as year-long support with resources and mentorship access.

In its sixteenth year, the Tasveer festival will showcase film, literature and storytelling in an SXSW-style event. The festival will be held in hybrid format from 1–24 October and aims to provide a platform to amplify underrepresented South Asian voices.
Seattle is lucky to have one of the largest South Asian-focused film festivals in the world, second only to Toronto. Now in its 14th year, the Tasveer South Asian Film Festival continues with a focus on stories from under-heard communities via a women-geared short film series (dubbed “She Persisted”) plus programming of seven LGBTQ+ movies.
The Tasveer South Asian Film Festival (TSAFF) is the largest South Asian film festival in the United States and one of the two largest in the world. The 14th festival taking place this year is focused on India and covers 12 days throughout four cities in the region, with an anticipated audience of 5,000 plus.

Here are a few shows, gatherings and tasty treats that are making us excited about what lies ahead.
The Tasveer South Asian Film Festival kicks off on Sept. 26th, bringing more than 60 films from across South Asia to screens throughout the South Puget Sound. The festival’s 2019 season will spotlight Indian films, but also will feature movies from around the region, including Tibet, Myanmar, Afghanistan, and diasporas in the U.S. and Canada. Now in its 14 year, TSAFF is the largest South Asian film festival in the U.S. The series runs through Oct. 6th. Port Townsend’s influence on the world of filmmaking isn’t limited to the Film Festival.
Jesse Alk moved to Port Townsend in the fourth grade and graduated from Port Townsend High School in 1992, and Sept. 29 marked the Washington state premiere of his first film, “Pariah Dog.”
Monday marked the autumnal equinox, which means our daylight hours are starting to take a nosedive. But never fear, the film festivals are here to carry us through the dreary season. This week brings three excellent options.
