Documentary Workshop Sunday Oct 1st 11-2pm Documentary Workshop $45 (Limited sliding scale are scholarships available. Please inquire) This half-day introductory class on documentary filmmaking will be conducted by local filmmaker, Nadeem Uddin. Workshop participants will learn about various documentary styles and of different concepts toward the production process. Participants will look at interviewing as an art that requires a unique approach for each individual interviewee. Participants will also learn about pre-production skills, licenses, technical audio and video equipment, and essential books and resources needed to produce documentary films in South Asian countries and other parts of the world. Various film clips by established South Asian documentarians, such as Rakesh Sharma, Paromita Vohra, and Anand Patwardhan will be shown as examples for critique. This interactive, dialogue-based workshop is designed for participants to gain insight, advice, feedback and support for their own project ideas. ISAFF Festival Directors and guest instructors Rita Meher and Farah Nousheen will discuss South Asian film festivals around the world and share their secrets on the selection process. Farah and Rita will also talk about women in film - both behind the camera and in front of the camera. Sponsored by Samsara Films, www.samsarafilms.com Instructors NADEEM UDDIN Born in Bhopal, India, Nadeem Uddin attended college in Texas and now resides in the Pacific Northwest. He has produced and photographed programs for Indian television and social activist organizations. His passionate work on the subject of the long term effects of the 1984 Union Carbide gas leak disaster in Bhopal, India, landed him a place as one of the producers of "Bhopal: The Search for Justice," a 52 minute documentary which premiered on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation's The Nature of Things in December, 2004, shown on Sundance Channel in December, 2005-06, and won the Best Medium-Length Documentary award at FICA, a prominent environmental film festival in Goias, Brazil in 2005. Uddin is the founder and President of Samsara Films. His other film "Kumbh Mela: Songs of the River" has been acquired for the Harvard Divinity School's permanent media collection; has been broadcast over Oasis-TV satellite network; and is on circulation through Stephen Simon's Spiritual Cinema Circles in April, 2006. His upcoming release is "Varanasi: Sacred River, Sacred Fire". FARAH NOUSHEEN Originally from Hyderabad, India, Farah is the founder and director of Tasveer and ISAFF. Her passion is independent South Asian film - whether political documentaries or experimental films. She is also the director and producer of the documentary "Nazrah: A Muslim Woman's Perspective" in which a diverse group of Muslim women engage in candid discussion. Nazrah has been screened in film festivals and classrooms around the world. RITA MEHER Born and brought in India, Rita began taking video production classes at Bellevue Community College in 2002 while she was the production manager for Nazrah. Since then, she has made 2 short films and worked on several local productions. Currently she freelances as a video producer for several local production companies and TV stations. She has lived in Japan before coming to the US where she produced the cable show Lets Speak English. She is the founder and director of Tasveer.
